Child turning 18

About this form

Please complete this form if a child in your care is about to turn 18 (you will need to complete a form for each child turning 18).

If you've already submitted a form, you don't need to complete another form. We will aim to update your record within 5 working days.

When a child turns 18, we usually stop including them in payments.

However, we may be able to continue payments if they:

  • are in school or tertiary education and attending regularly, and
  • remain financially dependent on you.

If you don't provide the information we have requested, when the child in your care turns 18, your benefit will be automatically reassessed using automated decision-making, unless you are receiving any of the payments listed below. You can find more information about Automated Decision-Making on the Work and Income website.

If you are getting any of the payments listed below, we may need to review your entitlements. Please get in touch with us before the child in your care turns 18 and finishes education or your payments will stop. If you are receiving any of these payments, you still need to complete this form.

Payment types are:

  • Emergency Benefit
  • Emergency Maintenance Allowance
  • Jobseeker Support on grounds of Hardship
  • Jobseeker Support Student Hardship
  • Special Benefit
  • Community Costs

Please note the questions in this form may change dynamically based on your answers to previous questions.

Keeping a copy of this form

After you submit the form, you’ll see a confirmation page with all the information you entered. If you want to keep a copy, you can print that page or save it as a PDF using the browser’s print function. We can’t provide you with a copy of the form later.

Your situation

A 'financially dependent' child is one

  • whose care is your responsibility,
  • who you maintain as part of your family,
  • who depend or rely on you for financial support,
  • who is not being paid any financial support from Work and Income, Oranga Tamariki, Youth Service, or StudyLink,
  • who is not working full-time.

You only need to complete this form if your child is turning 18 and we've sent you a letter.

If the child in your care is no longer financially dependent on you, we may need to review your entitlements.

Please get in touch with us on:

Or, book an appointment at your nearest Work and Income service centre

If the child in your care is enrolled in school or tertiary education, but is currently on holiday or semester break, they can still be included in your payments until they complete their education this year.

As the child in your care is no longer in education, they will continue to be included in your payments until after they turn 18. We will let you know when your payments change.

If you are getting any of the payments listed below, we may need to review your entitlements. Please get in touch with us before the child in your care turns 18 and finishes education or your payments will stop.

Payment types are:

  • Emergency Benefit
  • Emergency Maintenance Allowance
  • Jobseeker Support on grounds of Hardship
  • Jobseeker Support Student Hardship
  • Special Benefit
  • Community Costs
